I have three daughters and my oldest in beginning her second year with CC. We were standing in line to by a notebook and my four year old, not enrolled, recites that that front of her notebook is reflecting and refracting the light. At this point, my six year old spouts off "you are missing one!" The four year old looks up and smiles and says "spectrum". They burst into giggles and make voices like the gentlemen on the Power Point and recite the question and answer from Cycle 2. With CC as my safety net, I feel more confident to homeschool all my girls. Thank you CC team. ~ The Dolan Family
We are six weeks into our 2nd year of Classical Conversations with my 2 girls, ages 4 and 6. We have spent the summer reading The Secret Garden, and were reading the last chapter together, about Colin’s father traveling through Europe and being in the Mountains of Switzerland. After asking them what mountains he could be in (they responded with “the Alps”) , we read on, and his Italian servant comes to him with a letter. I asked “why would he have an Italian servant, if he is in Switzerland?” My 6 year old told me correctly- Italy is just below Switzerland! Then my 4 year old said very mater–a-fact “After all, Switzerland IS just on top of the Po River!” Thanks to Classical Conversations, I believe my children could not get a better education anywhere!
One day my 5 year old daughter asked me "Mom, why did Augusta Maine conquer New Hampshire? I had no idea what she was talking about so I asked her what she meant. She answered "You know, that song we sing that goes Augusta Maine, Concord New Hampshire..." Ah yes. Our state capitals song, cycle 3 of Classical Conversations.
My 6 year old daughter was playing in the backyard. She and her brothers dug up a worm and noticed it breaking apart. She squealed with delight "Look mom, the worm is fragmentating!". Having been studying Foundations Cycle 1 Science - she applied the science fact from week #7 very well!
My 7 year old son was thoughtfully watching rain drop streams on the car window sheild. He then said, "Mom, look... The Tigris and Eurphrates river! ". Knowing I was not in the Middle East, I said "What are you talking about? Where?". He replied, "There... These two raindrop streams". Having studied Cycle 1 geography the images of those two rivers were imprinted in his mind. Yeah! Classical Conversations!
Our family was playing a good game of Boggle when my 10 year old son whispered "Yes! A six letter word.". I, the mother and proud family Boggle champion, was unable to find a six-letter word in the letter dice that were rolled. After the timer sounded, I said "Okay, what is your six-letter word". He said "L-E-P-T-O-N, lepton". I said "What? Is that a word?". He replied "Yes, mom... Remember, it is part of an atom!". Having studied Foundations Cycle 3 science, I remembered - it was week fifteen's science fact!
My 4 year old daughter, Rice, has been learning History Cards along with the rest of us. I overheard her talking to my 6 year old as they were watching an Andy Griffith DVD. She said, "That's Barney, but his real name is Don Knotts, the Scottish Reformer."
We have just recently moved and my 3 yr. old has enjoyed emptying all the "school" boxes from the bonus room. Today he came running down the stairs with the presidents placemat and said, "Look Mommy! The Pwesidents!!" and he immediately started singing "Washington, Adams, Jefferson,....George W. Bush is our 43rd president and it's for him we prway" After going through cycle 3 last year with my 6 yr. old, it is obvious that my 3 yr. old was paying close attention as well!! WOW! Thank you CC!!
My five year old daughter discovered two caterpillars eating parsley in our herb garden. After carefully placing them in a suitable container with the parsley she said, "animalia and plantae". The caterpillar is animalia and the parsley is plantae! CC is such a blessing!
When playing with some caterpillars yesterday, my 7 year old named one Protista.
