A Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, high school student posted one of the highest scores on the Classical Learning Test this summer, earning a National Award and a $2,500 scholarship.
The CLT is a nationally-standardized college entrance exam designed for students who have been classically educated. Each student who posts one of the top 50 scores on the CLT each year earns a National Award and a scholarship to one of the more than 150 accredited colleges and universities that currently accept the CLT for college entrance.
This is the second year that Kara Miller, 15, has taken the CLT. “I love the CLT because of the scholarship potential for great schools and the quick results,” the Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, teen said. “I felt fairly confident going in because I tend to be a good test-taker. I did not spend much time specifically preparing for the CLT. Most of my preparation was learning and applying myself to math and grammar in the past.”
The daughter of Kevin and Valerie Miller of Dillsburg, Kara has been in the Grantham Community of Classical Conversations for four years and has a younger brother who is 3. Classical Conversations is a community-based homeschool program for families who want to learn together from a biblical worldview and using the classical model of education.
She likes school generally, but her preferred subjects are math and science. In her free time she enjoys reading and spending time with her friends and cousins. She is a nursery volunteer at her church and used to be in the church choir. C.S. Lewis is her favorite author, and her favorite quote is by G.K. Chesterton, “God is not a symbol of goodness, goodness is a symbol of God.”
Kara plans to attend a Christian college but has not yet selected a college or course of study.
Classic Learning Initiatives was founded by Jeremy Tate in 2015 to provide alternative standardized tests rooted in tradition and taking advantage of modern technologies. Featuring passages selected from great works across a variety of disciplines, the CLT suite of assessments provide an accurate and rigorous measure of reasoning, aptitude, and academic formation for students from diverse educational backgrounds. The exams are taken online in two hours, and all three assessments (CLT, CLT10, CLT8) give same-day test results.
