As Challenge students in Classical Conversations progress through their academic journey, they’re also preparing to enter the workforce and contribute meaningfully to society. This preparation extends beyond academic achievement to include developing a strong work ethic, understanding the value of free markets, and cultivating the ability to think independently.
Why is this relevant to Challenge students? As they approach graduation and begin to consider their future careers, understanding the current job market landscape and the expectations of employers becomes crucial. The principles and skills they’re developing through Classical Conversations—such as analytical thinking, self-motivation, and a strong foundation in ethics and value—are increasingly sought after by employers who are struggling to find reliable, productive employees in today’s challenging job market.
This blog post explores the current state of the American workforce, particularly focusing on the challenges faced by small businesses in hiring and retaining quality employees. It also highlights how the Classical Conversations approach to education is uniquely positioned to address these challenges, preparing students to become valuable assets in the workplace and potential leaders in preserving and advancing the American free market system.
The Job Market and Classical Education
Let me share with you a challenge facing America today and why I believe Classical Conversations is uniquely positioned to address it.
Current Challenges in the Job Market
The American free market became the most powerful economic force in history because Americans were self-made, free-thinking people who believed that grit, determination, and hard work lead to positive outcomes. This American work ethic has fueled the American dream for centuries.
However, recent surveys reveal a concerning trend. A Freedom Economy Index survey of over 80,000 small businesses found that 91% of business owners believe colleges are failing to prepare recent graduates for the workplace. With workplace lawsuits up 50% in the last two years and worker productivity hovering near all-time lows, it’s clear that there’s a disconnect between education and workplace readiness.
This evidence points to what you already know—across the country, the next generation is experiencing challenges in launching their careers. Not only are many colleges failing to fully prepare young people, but some parents are also struggling to equip their children for the workforce.
How Classical Education Prepares Students for Success
Education matters, and it’s about more than just a degree—it’s preparation for all of life. An education that confers a diploma but doesn’t equip students with wisdom and valuable life skills is a missed opportunity. This is no surprise to the Classical Conversations community. It’s why you’ve chosen to chart a different path for your family.
As the older generation ages out of the workforce, we’re at a crossroads. Will there be enough productive people left to work? Or will we see American ingenuity, creativity, and commerce decline?
I believe the students of Classical Conversations and the broader classical Christian education movement are the key to addressing this challenge.
The Impact of Classically Educated Workers on Businesses
Students of Classical Conversations live to know God and make Him known in all of life. They learn everything—history, mathematics, literature—under the Lordship of Christ, who teaches them not only what is true but also how to live. They understand that work is good and is part of the cultural mandate given by God.
Employers are eager for hard-working employees who don’t just work, but enjoy it and bring value to the customers they serve. At RedBalloon, we emphasize this mindset for all our employees. Our core values are to bless the customer, bless the employee, and bless the shareholders. We want our team to think biblically about all they do, whether it’s talking to customers on the phone or developing software.
We believe that the Classical Conversations community is filled with the kind of people small businesses need. This is why we’ve partnered with Classical Conversations to create an alumni portal where CC alums can create a profile and become “discoverable” by Freedom Economy businesses looking for mission and values-aligned job seekers.
Through the Classical Conversations career portal, CC members can create a free jobseeker profile and receive a specially branded Classical Conversations badge to set them apart. Members will also be guided through the profile and resume building process, making it easier for first-time job seekers to showcase their relevant skills and background.
Today’s world faces challenges, but I am confident that the opportunities are immense for the folks at CC to “shine as lights in the world” (Phil. 2:14) and be the blessing that these businesses need. We’re excited to partner together to make that happen.
