Southern Pines, NC—Classical Conversations, the world’s largest classical homeschooling organization, and Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, have joined forces to offer a unique master’s degree program for homeschooling parents.
Classical Conversations CEO Robert Bortins announced the new program last week, and SEU has already had to raise the maximum number of students it will accept into the program this fall. The degree is called the Master of Arts in Classical Studies. It is waiting on approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
“This program is the only one of its kind in the world,” said Robert Bortins, Classical Conversations CEO. “I believe this will revolutionize homeschooling, and I am thrilled to partner with Southeastern University on this groundbreaking journey.”
This is a unique program in that it lets CC parents study alongside their children, according to Scott Whitaker, Director of New Initiatives for CC. They are frequently studying the same information, just from a different perspective and at a higher level. The parents also study the classical model of learning in depth, which helps them in teaching their children. Finally, each master’s student must select an area of concentration that they will study in more depth.
The program offers seven concentrations including: English & Rhetoric, Arithmetic & Geometry, Harmonics & History, Latin & Grammar, Logic & Dialectic, Science, Natural Philosophy & Research, Education & Pedagogy.
The base requirements for the program are that the applicant must be associated with a local Classical Conversations community and must hold a valid bachelor’s degree.
