What Is The Math Map: Naturals?
Naturals is the second of thirteen levels of The Math Map, the first and only Classical Conversations math curriculum years in the making. While the full curriculum is still under development (with the exciting release of The Math Map: Complex for Challenge A families next year in 2024!), this beta release of Naturals as one of the benefits of CC Connected gives parents a glimpse into learning math the classical way with The Math Map.
Just as with learning a foreign language, to fully understand math you need to start with its grammar. Not understanding the language of mathematics may lead to math anxiety. To help parents and students become confident mathematically, the Naturals level of The Math Map presents math concepts using words, symbols, and images with a limited set of numbers so that families can begin to develop fluency in the language of mathematics.
Each week for thirty weeks, the Naturals materials include a manageable lesson that will take you about thirty minutes to an hour to complete, plus math solutions, a glossary of terms, an audio glossary, and overview videos.
Can My Family Use The Math Map: Naturals?
The Math Map: Naturals beta release is primarily intended to be used by parents to help you become familiar with The Math Map format and its approach to learning math. As you simply trace, match, fill, and copy your way through each of the lessons, you will learn the grammar of mathematics—the entry point into the math conversation!
That said, your children are more than welcome to learn right alongside you. However, if you choose to make your learning with Naturals a family activity, know that as a beta release, support materials for parents are currently limited for The Math Map. Still, your student will certainly benefit from engaging in the math conversation with you and The Math Map: Naturals!
On full release, The Math Map: Naturals is aimed at families with students ages 6 and up learning through the Classical Conversations Foundations program.
