If you’re currently having your child work through the Foundations Program (Classical Conversations’ curriculum for elementary-aged children, ages 4-12), you might be worried that he or she is not receiving the best preparation for high school and beyond. That’s natural. Everyone wants what is best for their children, including the best education. But relax! The Foundations Program has got your child covered to prepare them for the Essentials and Challenge Programs as well as college after graduation.
Not convinced? Take it from Denise, a Classical Conversations mom in Tennessee, who describes her experience using Foundations with her children. Here, Denise notes her favorite aspects about the Foundations program:
Insights:
- Foundations is comprehensive, yet simple.
- The benefits of Latin.
Foundations is Comprehensive, Yet Simple
Denise recommends not adding much to Foundations. The program excels in providing a comprehensive, classical study of the basic subjects—history, science, English, Latin, geography, and math—in digestible doses for students ages 4-12. Since it offers a wide array of subjects, children have the freedom to discover what they are most interested in.
Thus, this program is not only rich with knowledge; it is also a great deal of fun for children as they develop preferences for certain subjects and for parents as they watch their children acquire a lasting desire to learn.
The Benefits of Latin
Public schools don’t teach Latin anymore. It is, as they say, a “dead language.” However, while it may not be spoken, the addition of Latin to the Foundations Curriculum offers students the chance to learn vocabulary in a different language, which will certainly benefit them in their studies of romance languages in the future, such as Spanish and French.
Denise says that when children study Latin, they get to play with language in a unique way. This helps students down the road as they master not only other foreign languages, but also the complexities of English. (note: for more on the benefits of Latin, click here).
Is Foundations enough?
In conclusion, not much needs to be added to the Classical Conversations Foundations Curriculum! The goals of this program are to teach children to love learning and prepare them for future studies, which it accomplishes through offering a thorough yet uncomplicated education of, well, the foundations.
If your child is currently in or about to enter Foundations, encourage them to pursue subjects they are most interested in and have fun with them along their journey. Also, don’t forget that Latin. It’s good stuff!
