As a new Classical Conversations dad, I recently watched the 2025 National Memory Master competition for the first time, and it reshaped how I think about education. National Memory Master is more than a showcase of academic skill. It is a living example of what a classical Christian foundation can produce in a student. This year’s champion, Evangelene, demonstrated remarkable mastery in history, science, math, Latin, geography, and English grammar. Her story, and the discipline behind it, revealed how consistent daily effort, family support, and the Classical Conversations community can equip students to excel academically and grow spiritually.
My First Glimpse of National Memory Master
When I tuned in to watch the 2025 National Memory Master competition, I expected to be impressed. What I did not expect was how deeply it would shape the way I think about education.
As a new Classical Conversations dad, I had heard about Memory Master in passing, but seeing it unfold on screen brought it to life. Here were students, some as young as 11 or 12, calmly and confidently recalling thousands of facts across history, science, math, Latin, geography, and English grammar. Not in a crammed, last-minute-test kind of way, but with the ease of truths woven into long-term memory through years of steady, consistent review.
At the center of it all this year was Evangelene, the 2025 National Memory Master Champion, whose story reminded me why our family chose homeschooling in the first place.
What Is National Memory Master
Before a student can even qualify for the national stage, they must first become a Classical Conversations Memory Master in their local community. In order to accomplish this, they complete three proofs of the Foundations memory work with parents and tutors. In the first two proofs, they must recite all the Foundations memory work for the year:
- 160 events from a timeline spanning Creation to modern history
- 24 history sentences
- 24 science questions and answers
- Math facts (multiplication through 15s, squares, cubes, conversions, and math laws)
- English grammar definitions and lists
- Latin vocabulary, conjugations or declensions, and John 1:1–7 in Latin
- Geography covering continents, countries, states, capitals, and physical features
- All 47 U.S. presidents
Once they have achieved that, they can apply for the National Memory Master competition, a gathering of the best from CC communities across the country, with a $10,000 scholarship on the line.
Evangelene’s Story of Faith, Family, and Steady Work
What struck me most was not just Evangelene’s mastery, it was the way her family got there. Her parents shared about the power of a simple, repeatable routine: 20 minutes a day of review, spread across the whole year, building mastery without burnout.
They did not treat Memory Master like an all-consuming pursuit. Life went on with piano, violin, dance, and family trips. Because they stayed faithful to a cadence, they reached the National Memory Master competition not with stress but with readiness.
Her mom shared something that stuck with me: you do not have to be a teacher to homeschool, you just have to be willing to learn alongside your children. She had discovered new things she had never learned in her own schooling, and that joy in learning became contagious for her kids.
Her dad emphasized that Memory Master is not just about facts, it is about forming young adults who love truth, see God’s hand in all subjects, and are equipped to serve Christ with both humility and confidence.
Why Watching Changed My Perspective on Education
As I watched from home, I realized that National Memory Master is the fruit of a long, slow, faithful process, the kind of process our culture rarely celebrates. These students were not showing off, they were stewarding the knowledge they had been entrusted with.
I also saw how the Classical Conversations community plays a vital role. Parents, Tutors, and Directors are all pulling in the same direction, cheering each other on, and sharing ideas. Even as an observer, it was clear that no one does this alone.
And maybe most surprisingly, I saw how achievable it is. The myth that homeschooling is an overwhelming, eight-hour-a-day marathon fell apart as I heard story after story of families integrating learning into life, sometimes around the dinner table, sometimes in the car, sometimes before bedtime.
A Moment I Will Remember
One of the most moving moments came when Evangelene’s name was announced as the winner, and her family and friends surrounded her in a giant hug. The $10,000 prize was exciting, but it was not the main thing. The main thing was the joy of finishing well, giving her best for God’s glory, and celebrating with her newfound friends. This spirit of camaraderie is rarely seen in a competition of this sort!
As her dad put it: “Anything worth doing, the greatest rewards come from the hardest work.”
Practical Advice for Parents Considering Memory Master
If you are a CC parent wondering whether your child could do this, my advice, drawn from what I witnessed, is simple:
- Start small and stay steady. Even 20 minutes a day adds up.
- Learn with them. Your excitement will become theirs.
- Lean on your community. Other families are your best resource.
- Focus on the process, not just the prize. The habits and confidence they gain are lasting rewards.
Whether your student aims for Memory Master or simply builds a deeper love for learning, the journey is worth it. And if you ever get the chance to watch the National Memory Master competition, even from afar, do it. You will see more than academic skill. You will see the beauty of a classical foundation brought to life.
